Skating music: some recommendations

I am constantly on the lookout for music that sounds good for skating.  It may be an especially catchy beat, an inspiring melody, or musical flourishes that invite especially flashy skating moves.

You may detect a bias for 60's & 70's era pop music, and I plead guilty!  But you'll see a lot of other things here as well.  For example, music from South Africa, Brazil, Poland and Cape Verde.  Also plenty of Electro-Swing.  And regarding 60's and 70's pop music: it's just possible that I have some things listed here that you've never heard before.

What you're not going to see here are pieces that you've already heard dozens of times in recent competitions.  If that's what you want, I'll be happy to create a cut for you, but I hope that you'll consider something a little off the beaten track.  And, of course, I'm very interested in knowing what music fires up your skating!

Everything on this list has been field-tested: meaning, I've skated to it playing over a rink's PA system.  This test eliminates a lot of otherwise wonderful music, but that's the way it goes.

I'll treat this list as a blog, adding to it every few days as I hear, collect and test new pieces.

Random notes:

- I love skating to songs by Stevie Wonder or Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.  Both have plenty of songs with great skating rhythm, nice clear arrangements, and are sadly underutilized for skating program.  For 2024, I will edit program using music by either artist at no charge!

- I am re-evaluating a number of quiet songs and classical pieces as I have found that they can be made very audible in a rink by applying audio compression (not simply jacking up the volume).  I've provided an example here.
